Historical & Ecological Origin

Mittry Lake was formed by the construction of the Mittry Lake Dam on the Gila River. The dam was built in the 1950s as part of the Yuma Project to provide irrigation water. The area was subsequently designated as a wildlife area to manage and protect the habitat for waterfowl and other species attracted to the reservoir.
