Monkey Point, Tobago Cays, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, North America

Monkey Point is a geographical feature located on the island of Union Island within the Tobago Cays Marine Park, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

This promontory is characterized by its rocky outcrops and dense tropical vegetation.

Visual Characteristics

The point consists of dark, volcanic rock formations interspersed with dense green foliage, primarily consisting of sea grape trees and various palm species. The coastline is irregular, with small coves and exposed rock faces. The water surrounding the point is typically clear, with visibility dependent on sea conditions.

Location & Access Logistics

Monkey Point is situated on the southeastern tip of Union Island. Access is primarily via boat from other islands within the Tobago Cays or from Union Island's main settlement, Clifton. From Clifton, it is approximately a 3km journey by water taxi or private vessel. There is no direct road access. Anchorages are available in the sheltered bays to the west of the point.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Monkey Point is a natural geological formation, likely volcanic in origin, shaped by erosion from wind and sea over millennia. Ecologically, it forms part of the coastal habitat for various marine and terrestrial species, including the island's namesake, the Mona monkey, which were introduced to the island.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can engage in snorkeling in the waters adjacent to the point, observing coral reefs and marine life. Hiking trails, though not formally maintained, allow exploration of the vegetation. Observation of the Mona monkeys in their natural habitat is a primary activity. Kayaking around the point is also possible.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no formal facilities at Monkey Point itself. Restrooms and food vendors are located in Clifton, approximately 3km away. Cell phone signal is intermittent and unreliable at the point.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for visibility for snorkeling is during the morning hours when the sun is high and the sea is generally calmer. The dry season, from January to May, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall. High tide is generally preferred for accessing certain snorkeling areas.

Facts & Legends

Local lore suggests that the Mona monkeys were introduced to Union Island in the 1970s to control insect populations. A specific tip for visitors is to approach the monkeys with caution and maintain a respectful distance, as they can become habituated to human presence and may exhibit territorial behavior.
