Petit Tabac, Tobago Cays, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, North America

Petit Tabac is a small, uninhabited island located within the Tobago Cays Marine Park in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

It is one of the five islands that form the Tobago Cays archipelago.

Visual Characteristics

The island consists of a low-lying sand cay with sparse vegetation, primarily sea grape trees and low-lying scrub. The surrounding waters are characterized by clear, shallow turquoise hues over a sandy seabed and coral formations.

Location & Access Logistics

Petit Tabac is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers east of Jamesby Island, the largest island in the Tobago Cays. Access is exclusively by boat. Charter yachts, water taxis, and local fishing boats operating from St. Vincent, Bequia, or Union Island are the primary means of transport. There is no direct road access or public ferry service. Mooring buoys are available for temporary anchoring, but anchoring directly on coral is prohibited.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Petit Tabac is a natural sand cay, formed by the accumulation of sand and coral fragments over time. It is part of the Tobago Cays Marine Park, established to protect the coral reef ecosystem and marine life, including sea turtles which frequent the area.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is snorkeling in the shallow waters surrounding the island, observing marine life. The island is also a popular spot for picnicking and relaxation. Visitors can walk the perimeter of the island, which takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no permanent structures or facilities on Petit Tabac. Restrooms, food vendors, and cell phone service are not available on the island itself. These amenities are typically found on larger, inhabited islands within the Tobago Cays or on visiting vessels.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for clear water visibility and calm seas is generally between December and May, during the dry season. Mid-morning offers good lighting for underwater photography. Tidal conditions do not significantly impact access or activities on this shallow cay.

Facts & Legends

Petit Tabac gained international recognition as a filming location for the 2007 movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," where it served as the setting for Captain Jack Sparrow's marooning. Visitors often look for the specific spot depicted in the film.
