Moray Terraces, Sacred Valley, Peru, South America

The Moray Terraces are a series of circular agricultural terraces located near Maras in the Sacred Valley of Peru.

These terraces are an archaeological site showcasing ancient Inca agricultural experimentation.

Visual Characteristics

The site consists of approximately 28 distinct terraces, arranged in concentric circles. The terraces are carved into the hillside, forming a series of amphitheater-like structures. The walls of the terraces are constructed from stone, with the interior filled with soil. The depth of the terraces varies, with the deepest reaching approximately 30 meters. The soil color ranges from dark brown to lighter shades depending on the layer.

Location & Access Logistics

The Moray Terraces are situated approximately 7 kilometers west of the town of Maras. Access from Cusco involves traveling via the Cusco-Chinchero road (Route AP-101) for approximately 40 kilometers, then taking a smaller, unpaved road towards Maras. From Maras, a further 4 kilometers of unpaved road leads to the site. Parking is available at designated areas near the entrance. Public transport options are limited; hiring a private taxi or joining a guided tour from Cusco or Ollantaytambo are the primary methods of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Moray Terraces are believed to have been constructed by the Inca Empire, likely during the 15th century. Their exact purpose is debated, but the prevailing theory is that they served as an agricultural laboratory for the Incas. The different levels and microclimates created by the terraces allowed for the cultivation and acclimatization of various crops at different altitudes. The site is geologically situated on a plateau with a natural depression that facilitated the construction of these unique structures.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk along the edges of the terraces and descend into some of the deeper sections via designated paths. Observation points offer panoramic views of the entire complex. Photography is a primary activity. No specific tours are offered on-site, but guides are available for hire at the entrance.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available near the main entrance. Limited shade is provided by natural rock overhangs in some areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally unreliable within the immediate vicinity of the terraces. There are no food vendors directly at the site; visitors typically bring their own provisions or purchase them in Maras.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is generally mid-morning (9:00 AM - 11:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:00 PM - 5:00 PM) to capture the interplay of light and shadow on the terraces. The dry season, from April to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with minimal rainfall. There are no tide requirements as the site is inland.

Facts & Legends

A unique aspect of Moray is the significant temperature difference observed between the top and bottom of the deepest terraces, which can be as much as 15 degrees Celsius. This temperature gradient was crucial for the Incas' agricultural experiments. Local legends suggest the site was a place of spiritual significance, used for rituals related to fertility and harvest.
