Mosque of Pasha Qasim, Pecs, Hungary, Europe
The Mosque of Pasha Qasim (Gázi Kászim pasa dzsámija), now officially the Downtown Candlemas Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is the largest Ottoman-era monument in Hungary and a primary symbol of Pécs.
Visual Characteristics
The building is a massive square structure topped by a green copper dome. It retains key Islamic architectural features, including ogee-arched (pointed) windows, traditional honeycomb vaulting (muqarnas), and a mihrab (prayer niche) oriented toward Mecca. Following its conversion to a church, a Christian altar was added, and the interior now features frescoes depicting both biblical scenes and the city's history. The hybrid aesthetic is most visible in the presence of both the Cross and the Crescent on the dome.

Access: Entry for tourists requires a ticket. The building remains a functioning Catholic church; sightseeing is prohibited during mass.
Hours: Generally open Monday–Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Sunday 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.
Historical Origin
The mosque was constructed by Pasha Qasim the Victorious in the 1540s, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Pécs, using stones from the demolished medieval Saint Bartholomew's Church. After the liberation of the city in 1686, the building was gifted to the Jesuits, who converted it into a church. In the 1930s and 1960s, it underwent significant renovations to strip away Baroque additions and reveal the original Ottoman architecture.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Mihrab: The original Ottoman prayer niche remains visible on the southeastern wall.
Calligraphic Inscriptions: Traces of original Arabic inscriptions from the Quran can still be seen on the interior walls.
Interfaith Symbolism: The exterior dome is topped by a crescent moon and a cross, symbolizing the building's dual history.
Underground Crypt: The lower level houses a modern interactive exhibition and a burial space.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility is located in a high-density 5G coverage zone. A visitor information desk and a small gift shop are located at the entrance. The main floor is accessible, though the underground exhibition areas and narrow passages may have limited accessibility for those with mobility impairments.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon provides optimal lighting for the exterior stone facade. The interior is best viewed on sunny days when light through the high arched windows highlights the original Ottoman masonry and Islamic geometric patterns.
Facts & Legends
A verified detail: The mosque’s dimensions are nearly identical in width and height (approximately 28 meters), making it a perfect cube topped by a dome. Legend says that the Ottoman architect designed the acoustics so that a whisper at the mihrab could be heard clearly throughout the entire hall.
