The Tower of Pécs refers to the TV Tower (Pécsi tévétorony), a telecommunications and observation structure situated atop the 535-meter Misina peak of the Mecsek Mountains. It remains the tallest building in Hungary, reaching a total height of 197 meters.

Visual Characteristics

The structure is a vertical concrete cylinder consisting of a reinforced concrete shaft topped with a steel antenna mast. It features a circular, glass-enclosed observation deck and restaurant levels at the 72-meter and 75-meter marks. The exterior is finished in industrial grey concrete, while the antenna section is painted in alternating red and white safety bands.

Location & Access Logistics

The tower is located at the summit of Misina, approximately 5km north of the Pécs city center. It is accessible by car via the winding Misina tető road, with a paid parking lot located at the base. Public transport is available via bus line 35, which runs from the central railway station directly to the tower entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction occurred between 1968 and 1973 based on the designs of István Vízvárdy, Gusztáv Söpkéz, and József Thoma. It replaced a 1930s-era stone lookout tower. The site is situated within the Mecsek Protected Landscape Area, characterized by karst limestone formations and dense oak and beech forests.

Key Highlights & Activities

The primary activity is the 360-degree observation of the city and the surrounding Baranya County from the open-air and enclosed decks. An express elevator transports visitors to the observation level. The tower houses a permanent dinosaur exhibition featuring the life-sized model of the Komlosaurus, a species whose tracks were discovered in the nearby coal mines.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The facility includes a panoramic restaurant and café at the 72-meter level. Public restrooms are located near the entrance and within the restaurant area. 5G cellular signal is exceptionally strong due to the tower's function as a primary broadcast hub. A small gift shop operates in the lobby.

Best Time to Visit

Visibility is highest on clear autumn days after a cold front has passed, often allowing views of the Croatian Papuk Mountains to the south. Sunset provides the best lighting for photography of the city basin. The tower operates year-round, though the open-air deck may be closed during high-wind events.

Facts & Legends

The tower contains approximately 18,500 tons of reinforced concrete. A local tip for visitors is that on exceptionally clear days with low humidity, the peaks of the Austrian Alps, located over 200km away, are occasionally visible from the highest observation point.
