The mural is situated approximately 18 kilometers northwest of the city of Pinar del Río. Access is via the Carretera a Viñales (Viñales Highway). From Pinar del Río, follow the highway towards Viñales. The mural is visible from the road. Parking is available at a designated area adjacent to the site. Public transport options are limited; local buses may run along the highway, but direct service to the mural is not guaranteed. Taxis from Pinar del Río or Viñales are the most reliable method of access.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The Mural de la Prehistoria was conceived by Fidel Castro and painted between 1961 and 1967. The project was directed by Cuban artist Luis Woodhouse. The purpose was to illustrate the theory of evolution and the history of life on Earth. The site is located within the Viñales Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its karst landscape and mogotes (limestone hills).
