Musee d Art Moderne Andre Malraux, Le Havre, France, Europe

The MuMa (Musée d'art moderne André Malraux) in Le Havre is one of France's most significant art museums, housing the country's most extensive collection of Impressionist works outside of Paris.

Architectural Highlights

The museum building, inaugurated in 1961, is a masterpiece of modern architecture.

Designers: Designed by architects Guy Lagneau, Michel Weill, Jean Dimitrijevic, and Raymond Audigier, with input from the engineer Jean Prouvé.

Glass and Steel: The structure is essentially a transparent glass and steel box. It features no load-bearing interior walls, allowing for a completely modular and flexible exhibition space.

Natural Light: Large glass facades (totaling 550 m²) integrate the building with the surrounding maritime landscape. The light of the Seine estuary, which originally inspired the Impressionists, flows directly into the galleries, filtered by a system of louvers.

"Le Signal": A monumental 22-meter-long concrete sculpture by Henri-Georges Adam stands on the museum's forecourt, serving as a landmark between the museum and the sea.

Notable Collections & Artworks

The MuMa is primarily celebrated for its Impressionist and Fauvist collections.

The Boudin Collection: Thanks to a massive donation from Louis Boudin, the museum holds the world’s largest collection of works by Eugène Boudin (the mentor of Claude Monet), including over 200 sketches and paintings.

Impressionism: Features major works by Claude Monet (including The Parliament, Sunset), Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley.

Fauvism: Extensive holdings of artists born in Le Havre or active in the region, such as Raoul Dufy, Othon Friesz, and Georges Braque.

The Senn-Foulds Donation: In 2004, this donation significantly elevated the museum's status, adding dozens of works by masters like Degas, Delacroix, and Matisse.
