The building originally served as a district commissioner's office during the colonial era. It was later converted into a museum in 1997 to house and display artifacts of historical significance to the Nyeri region and Kenya.

A notable artifact displayed is a collection of personal effects belonging to Dedan Kimathi, a leader of the Mau Mau Uprising. The museum also houses a replica of a traditional Agikuyu homestead.
