Oedolgae Rock, Jeju Island, South Korea, Asia
Oedolgae Rock is a prominent sea stack located off the southern coast of Jeju Island, South Korea.
This geological formation stands as a solitary pillar rising from the sea, approximately 1.5 kilometers southeast of the main coastline.
Visual Characteristics
Oedolgae Rock is a single, large columnar basalt rock formation. It exhibits a dark grey to black coloration, typical of volcanic rock. The rock's surface is irregular, showing signs of erosion from wave action. Its height is approximately 10 meters above sea level. The surrounding waters are generally a deep blue, with lighter turquoise hues closer to the shore. The immediate area is characterized by rocky intertidal zones and sparse coastal vegetation.
Location & Access Logistics
Oedolgae Rock is situated in Seogwipo City, Jeju Island. Access is via the coastal road, specifically Oedolgae-ro. From Jeju International Airport (CJU), it is approximately a 1-hour drive (around 50 kilometers) south. Parking is available at a designated lot near the Oedolgae Rock viewing area. Public transport options include local buses from Seogwipo Bus Terminal; Bus routes 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 all stop at the Oedolgae Rock bus stop, which is a short walk from the viewing point.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Oedolgae Rock is a natural geological formation, a remnant of volcanic activity on Jeju Island. It is composed of basalt, a common extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava exposed at or very near the surface of a planet or narrowly in the subsurface. Its current form is the result of millions of years of erosion by wind and sea.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe the rock formation from a well-maintained coastal path and viewing platforms. Photography is a primary activity. The area is also known for its coastal scenery and the legend associated with the rock. Walking the Oedolgae Coastal Trail offers views of the rock and the surrounding coastline. Fishing is permitted in designated areas, though caution is advised due to wave action.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Oedolgae Rock parking area. Shade is limited, primarily provided by small shelters on the viewing platforms. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally good in the area. Food vendors and small restaurants are located near the parking lot and along Oedolgae-ro.
Best Time to Visit
For photography, the early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions, with the sun casting longer shadows. The best months for weather are typically April through October, offering milder temperatures and less rainfall. High tide can enhance the visual isolation of the rock, while low tide exposes more of the surrounding intertidal zone.
Facts & Legends
A local legend states that Oedolgae Rock is the petrified form of a woman named Gangnim who waited for her husband, a fisherman, to return from sea. When he never did, she was turned into the rock. Another story suggests it is the petrified form of a woman who was unjustly accused and cursed.
