Old Botanical Garden, Gottingen, Germany, Europe

Old Botanical Garden of Göttingen University (Alter Botanischer Garten) is a historic scientific garden located on the edge of the old city center of Göttingen.

Visual Characteristics

The garden is defined by its diverse landscape within a compact 4.5-hectare area. It features a historic greenhouse complex, a central pond with water lilies, and a series of terraced paths. The architecture is a mix of 18th-century university buildings and 19th-century iron-and-glass conservatories. It is integrated into the city's historic fortification ramparts (Wall).

Located at Untere Karspüle 2, 37073 Göttingen.

Transit: 10-minute walk northeast from the Market Square (Gänseliesel) or 15 minutes from the main station.

Access: Multiple entrances, including from the city wall (Wall) and Untere Karspüle.

Hours: Daily 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (Greenhouse hours may vary).

Admission: Free.

Historical Origin

Founded in 1736 by the Swiss physician and botanist Albrecht von Haller, shortly after the establishment of the University of Göttingen. It is one of the oldest and most significant botanical gardens in Germany. It was originally designed to grow medicinal plants for the university's medical faculty and has expanded its collection over nearly three centuries.

Key Highlights & Activities

Historic Greenhouses: A collection of eight greenhouses, including the Victoria House (housing tropical water lilies) and the Fern House.

Alpinetum: One of the oldest collections of alpine plants in Europe.

Arboretum: Features rare tree species, some dating back to the 19th century.

The Wall Walk: The garden is directly connected to the historic city ramparts, offering elevated views of the garden layout.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The garden features well-maintained but narrow gravel paths; some sections involving the city wall are not wheelchair accessible. Benches are distributed throughout for quiet study or observation. 5G signal is stable.

Best Time to Visit

Late Spring: For the peak blooming period of the alpine and medicinal collections.

Early Summer: To see the tropical water lilies (Victoria amazonica) in the heated greenhouses.

Facts & Legends

A technical oddity is the underground tunnel connecting parts of the garden beneath the city wall, which allows gardeners to move between different climatic zones. Legend states that the ghost of Albrecht von Haller still wanders the paths at dawn, inspecting the rare medicinal herbs he first planted to ensure they are being properly cataloged by modern students.
