Visual Characteristics

The site features concrete structures, including a partially submerged dock and several building foundations. Exposed rebar and weathered concrete are visible. The surrounding area consists of coral sand and sparse vegetation.

Location & Access Logistics

The Old Japanese Dock Area is situated on the eastern shore of Wotje Island, approximately 1.5 kilometers east of the main village. Access is via unpaved paths from the village. Parking is available on the sand adjacent to the paths. No public transport services reach this specific location; travel from the Wotje Airport (WTE) requires a vehicle transfer to the village.

Historical & Ecological Origin

This dock area was constructed by the Japanese Imperial Navy during their administration of the Marshall Islands in the early 20th century, primarily for naval operations and resource extraction. The underlying landmass is a coral atoll, formed over millennia by the accumulation of coral skeletons.

Key Highlights & Activities

Observation of the concrete dock structure and foundations is the primary activity. The shallow waters around the dock may offer opportunities for observing marine life. No organized tours or specific activities are currently offered.

Infrastructure & Amenities

No public restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors are present at the Old Japanese Dock Area. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally weak to non-existent at this location.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for site observation is during daylight hours. Low tide may expose more of the submerged concrete structures. The dry season, from January to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

During World War II, the Japanese utilized this dock for servicing submarines and supply ships. Local accounts suggest that some equipment was scuttled in the waters surrounding the dock to prevent its capture by Allied forces.
