The roofline is low-pitched, and the windows are small, barred openings. The exterior color is a weathered grey-brown. The park grounds include open grassy areas and mature trees.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Wyoming State Penitentiary began in 1888 and was completed in 1901. It served as a correctional facility until 1997. The site was later redeveloped into a public park. The geological origin of the sandstone used in construction is sedimentary rock formations native to the region.

Key Highlights & Activities

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available in a separate building near the parking lot. Limited shade is provided by mature trees. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No food vendors are present within the park; nearest options are in downtown Rawlins.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography of the building exteriors, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The months of May through September offer the most favorable weather conditions for outdoor activities. No tide considerations apply.

Facts & Legends

During its operational years, the penitentiary was known for its harsh conditions and was nicknamed "The Big House." A local legend claims that the spirits of former inmates can sometimes be heard or seen within the abandoned cell blocks, though this is unverified.
