Rawlins Uplift Overlook, Rawlins, USA Wyoming, North America
The Rawlins Uplift Overlook is a geological observation point located in Rawlins, Wyoming, USA.
This site provides a vantage point to observe the geological formations characteristic of the Rawlins Uplift.
Visual Characteristics
The overlook area consists of exposed sedimentary rock layers, primarily sandstone and shale, exhibiting distinct horizontal stratification. Colors range from light tan and ochre to darker reddish-brown hues, depending on mineral content and oxidation. The terrain is arid, with sparse desert vegetation including sagebrush and various grasses. The elevation offers a panoramic view of the surrounding high desert plateau.
Location & Access Logistics
The Rawlins Uplift Overlook is situated approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) west of the Rawlins city center. Access is via Wyoming State Highway 70 (WYO 70). Turn north onto an unpaved, well-maintained gravel road marked with a sign for the overlook. The gravel road extends for approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) to the designated parking area. Parking is available in a gravel lot with capacity for approximately 15 vehicles. No public transport services reach this location.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The Rawlins Uplift is a significant geological feature formed by tectonic forces that caused the Earth's crust in this region to rise. This uplift occurred over millions of years, exposing ancient sedimentary rock layers that were deposited in prehistoric seas. The area is classified as high desert steppe, characterized by its arid climate and specific plant and animal adaptations.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of geological strata. Photography of rock formations and landscape. Educational interpretation of local geology via informational signage. Short walks on established paths around the overlook area are possible.
Infrastructure & Amenities
A small, gravel parking lot is present. Informational signage detailing the geological features is installed. No restrooms, shade structures, or food vendors are available at the overlook. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent to non-existent.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning (sunrise) and late afternoon (sunset) are recommended due to the low angle of the sun casting shadows that highlight the rock strata. The months of May through October offer the most favorable weather conditions, with lower precipitation and milder temperatures. Winter months can experience significant snowfall and icy conditions, making access difficult.
Facts & Legends
The sedimentary layers visible at the Rawlins Uplift Overlook contain fossils dating back to the Cretaceous period, indicating the presence of ancient marine life. Local folklore sometimes refers to the uplifted land as a "sleeping giant," with the rock formations representing its contours.
