Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was formerly the site of Owens Field, Columbia's first municipal airport, which operated from 1928 to 1968. The park was established on the former airport grounds in the late 1960s. Ecologically, the area is part of the Sandhills region of South Carolina, characterized by sandy soils and mixed pine-hardwood forests.

For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers optimal lighting conditions due to the angle of the sun. The months of April, May, September, and October provide the most temperate weather, with average high temperatures between 20-27°C (68-81°F). The pond is accessible year-round.

Facts & Legends

A unique historical fact is that Owens Field was the site of the first scheduled commercial airline service in South Carolina, initiated in 1928. Local lore sometimes refers to the park as having "ghostly echoes" of its aviation past, though no verifiable accounts exist.
