Turn north onto County Road 20A, which leads directly into the park. Ample parking is available at designated lots near the boat launch, beach areas, and campgrounds. Public transport is not available to the recreation area.

Pelican Lake is a natural prairie lake, formed by glacial activity during the last ice age. It is part of the James River watershed. The area was designated as a recreation area to manage public access for fishing, boating, and camping. The surrounding land is primarily agricultural and prairie grassland.
