Visual Characteristics

The hill rises approximately 100 meters above the surrounding plains. Its slopes are covered in dense tropical vegetation. At the summit, several Buddhist temples and stupas are visible, constructed from concrete and stone, often painted in white or saffron hues. The caves, such as Phnom Sampeau Bat Cave, are natural limestone formations.

The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes by car or tuk-tuk. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Local tuk-tuks are the primary mode of transport from Battambang, with round-trip fares typically negotiated.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Phnom Sampeau is a natural limestone karst formation. Historically, the caves on the hill were used as killing caves by the Khmer Rouge regime during the Cambodian genocide. The temples at the summit were constructed in later periods, with ongoing renovations and additions.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can ascend the hill via a paved road or a series of steps. Activities include exploring the various caves, notably the Phnom Sampeau Bat Cave, which is home to millions of bats. Observing the mass exodus of bats at sunset is a primary attraction. Visiting the temples and stupas at the summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The "Killing Caves" are also a site of historical significance, with a memorial stupa containing skulls and bones.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the base of the hill and near some of the temple structures. Shade is provided by trees and temple structures. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Small food and drink vendors operate at the base of the hill and near the summit.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day to visit is late afternoon to witness the bat exodus at sunset. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather conditions. The best time for photography of the landscape is during the golden hour before sunset.

Facts & Legends

A local legend states that the hill was formed from the head of a giant. The Phnom Sampeau Bat Cave is one of the largest bat colonies in Southeast Asia, with an estimated population of over one million bats. The sheer volume of bats exiting the cave at dusk creates a continuous stream for approximately 45 minutes.
