The hill rises approximately 100 meters above the surrounding plains. Its slopes are covered in dense tropical vegetation. At the summit, several Buddhist temples and stupas are visible, constructed from concrete and stone, often painted in white or saffron hues. The caves, such as Phnom Sampeau Bat Cave, are natural limestone formations.

Phnom Sampeau is situated approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Battambang city center. Access is via National Road 5, turning onto a local road marked for Phnom Sampeau. The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes by car or tuk-tuk. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Local tuk-tuks are the primary mode of transport from Battambang, with round-trip fares typically negotiated.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Phnom Sampeau is a natural limestone karst formation. Historically, the caves on the hill were used as killing caves by the Khmer Rouge regime during the Cambodian genocide. The temples at the summit were constructed in later periods, with ongoing renovations and additions.

The best time of day to visit is late afternoon to witness the bat exodus at sunset. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather conditions. The best time for photography of the landscape is during the golden hour before sunset.
Facts & Legends
A local legend states that the hill was formed from the head of a giant. The Phnom Sampeau Bat Cave is one of the largest bat colonies in Southeast Asia, with an estimated population of over one million bats. The sheer volume of bats exiting the cave at dusk creates a continuous stream for approximately 45 minutes.
