The temple is constructed primarily from sandstone blocks. It features a central sanctuary with five towers, though only the central tower remains largely intact. The structure exhibits typical Khmer architectural elements, including lintels, pediments, and pilasters. The surrounding area is characterized by dense tropical vegetation.

Wat Banan is situated 10 kilometers south of Battambang city center. Access is via National Road 5, turning onto a smaller paved road leading to the temple. The final approach involves a climb of approximately 300 steps to reach the temple summit. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Tuk-tuks and private taxis are the primary modes of transport from Battambang.

Wat Banan was constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 11th century, intended as a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. Its design predates Angkor Wat and is considered a precursor to the larger temple complexes. The site is geologically a natural hill formation.

A local legend suggests that the temple's original name was "Phnom Banan," and that the name "Battambang" is derived from this. It is also said that the temple was used as a base by the Khmer Rouge during their regime.
