Wat Banan, Battambang, Cambodia, Asia

Wat Banan is a 11th-century Khmer temple located on a hill approximately 10 kilometers south of Battambang, Cambodia.

Visual Characteristics

The temple is constructed primarily from sandstone blocks. It features a central sanctuary with five towers, though only the central tower remains largely intact. The structure exhibits typical Khmer architectural elements, including lintels, pediments, and pilasters. The surrounding area is characterized by dense tropical vegetation.

Location & Access Logistics

Wat Banan is situated 10 kilometers south of Battambang city center. Access is via National Road 5, turning onto a smaller paved road leading to the temple. The final approach involves a climb of approximately 300 steps to reach the temple summit. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Tuk-tuks and private taxis are the primary modes of transport from Battambang.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Wat Banan was constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman II in the 11th century, intended as a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva. Its design predates Angkor Wat and is considered a precursor to the larger temple complexes. The site is geologically a natural hill formation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the central temple complex and its remaining structures. Climbing the steps to the summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The site is suitable for photography, particularly during morning and late afternoon hours.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic restroom facilities are available at the base of the hill. Shade is limited at the temple site itself, with more available at the base. Cell phone signal is generally available. Small local vendors selling drinks and snacks are present near the parking area.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is during the early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) to avoid harsh midday light. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most pleasant weather conditions. There are no tide-dependent activities.

Facts & Legends

A local legend suggests that the temple's original name was "Phnom Banan," and that the name "Battambang" is derived from this. It is also said that the temple was used as a base by the Khmer Rouge during their regime.
