Pipiwai Trail, Hana, USA Hawaii, North America
The Pipiwai Trail is a 4-mile roundtrip hiking path located within Haleakala National Park, near Hana on the island of Maui, Hawaii. It traverses diverse ecological zones, culminating at the Waimoku Falls.
Visual Characteristics
The trail begins with paved sections through open grassland before entering a dense bamboo forest. The bamboo stalks reach heights of 20-40 feet, creating a canopy that filters sunlight. Further along, the path transitions to a tropical rainforest environment with large banyan trees, ferns, and moss-covered rocks. The trail surface varies from packed earth to boardwalks and stone steps. The Waimoku Falls is a sheer basalt cliff face, approximately 400 feet high, with water cascading down its surface.
Location & Access Logistics
The Pipiwai Trail is situated at the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park, approximately 10 miles south of Hana town. Access is via Hawaii Route 31 (Piilani Highway). The park entrance fee is required. Parking is available at the Kīpahulu Visitor Center lot. There are no public transport services directly to the trailhead.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The trail was developed by the National Park Service to provide access to the Kipahulu Valley, an area of significant ecological importance. The valley is characterized by its native Hawaiian flora and fauna, including endemic bird species. The Waimoku Falls is a result of erosion and water flow over ancient lava flows.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking the full 4-mile loop is the primary activity. Specific points of interest include the Bamboo Forest, the Pools of Ohe'o (Seven Sacred Pools) which are accessible via a separate, shorter trail from the parking area, and the viewpoint for Waimoku Falls. Photography is permitted along the trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Kīpahulu Visitor Center. Shade is provided by the dense forest canopy for most of the trail. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent within the trail system. No food vendors are present at the trailhead; visitors should bring their own provisions.
Best Time to Visit
The trail is open from sunrise to sunset. For optimal lighting conditions for photography, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The best months for weather are generally from April to October, with lower rainfall. The Pools of Ohe'o may be closed for swimming during periods of heavy rain due to flash flood potential.
Facts & Legends
Local legend suggests that the Pipiwai Stream is home to the Menehune, a mythical race of small people who are said to have built many of the ancient Hawaiian structures. A specific tip for visitors is to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes as the trail can be muddy and uneven, especially after rain.
