Red Sand Beach (Kaihalulu Beach), Hana, USA Hawaii, North America
Red Sand Beach, known locally as Kaihalulu Beach, is a geological formation located on the island of Maui, Hawaii, USA.
Visual Characteristics
The beach is characterized by its distinct red sand, a result of eroded cinder cones. The cove is enclosed by steep, vegetated cliffs. The water color is typically a deep blue, contrasting with the red sand and green foliage. The beach is relatively small, with a narrow strip of sand.
Location & Access Logistics
Kaihalulu Beach is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers east of Hana town. Access is via a steep, unpaved trail that descends from the Kaihalulu Road. The trail is approximately 0.5 kilometers long and requires careful footing due to loose gravel and vegetation. Parking is limited to roadside availability along Kaihalulu Road. No public transport directly serves the beach access point.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The beach is a result of erosion of the cinder cone that forms the cove. The red color of the sand is due to the iron-rich volcanic rock that has weathered over time. The surrounding cliffs are covered in native Hawaiian vegetation.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible when ocean conditions are calm. The cove offers some protection from larger waves, but currents can be present. Exploration of the immediate cliff base is possible. Photography of the unique sand color and cove formation is a primary activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no developed facilities at Red Sand Beach. Restrooms, shade, and food vendors are not available at the site. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is mid-morning when sunlight illuminates the red sand. Ocean conditions are generally calmer during the summer months (June-August). Visitors should check local surf reports before attempting to swim, as conditions can change rapidly.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the beach was once a sacred site for Hawaiian royalty. The narrow access trail is prone to landslides, and visitors should exercise extreme caution.
