Place du Vieux Marche, Rouen, France, Europe
Place du Vieux Marché is a historic public square located in the western district of the city center in Rouen, Normandy. It serves as a primary site of historical commemoration and remains a functioning marketplace and commercial hub.
Visual Characteristics
The square is characterized by a contrast between medieval half-timbered houses (colombage) with exposed dark wood frames and the 1976 Eglise Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc, which features a sweeping, scale-like slate roof and modern copper cladding. The ground is paved with traditional grey cobblestones, and the ruins of the ancient Saint-Sauveur church remain visible as excavated stone foundations in the center.
Location & Access Logistics
The square is situated at the terminus of Rue du Gros-Horloge, approximately 800 meters south of the Gare de Rouen-Rive-Droite. It is accessible via the TEOR bus rapid transit lines (T1, T2, T3) at the "Vieux Marché" stop. Underground parking is available directly beneath the square at the Parking Indigo Vieux Marché.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site functioned as a primary execution ground during the Middle Ages and is the documented location where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431. The modern architectural elements, including the covered market and church, were designed by architect Louis Arretche to evoke both the shape of an overturned Viking ship and the flames of the pyre.
Key Highlights & Activities
The covered market (Le Marché) operates daily except Mondays, offering regional Norman produce such as Neufchâtel cheese and cider. Visitors can view the 16th-century Renaissance stained-glass windows salvaged from the destroyed Saint-Vincent church, now housed in the modern Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc church. The square is lined with outdoor cafe seating for dining.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public restrooms are located in the underground parking facility and near the bus station. The area provides 5G cellular coverage. Most of the square is level and wheelchair accessible, though the cobblestones are uneven. Numerous food vendors and pharmacies are located within the perimeter of the square.
Best Time to Visit
The market is most active between 08:00 and 12:00. Evening visits provide optimal lighting for the illuminated facades of the half-timbered buildings. June through August offers the most reliable weather for outdoor dining, while the late afternoon sun highlights the metallic texture of the church roof.
Facts & Legends
A 20-meter high modern cross stands on the exact spot where the stake was positioned in 1431. A verified historical oddity is that the modern church was built specifically to house stained glass that had been dismantled and hidden in a bunker during World War II, surviving the Allied bombings that destroyed the original church.
