Plzeň Historical Underground, Plzen, Czech Republic, Europe
The Plzeň Historical Underground (Plzeňské historické podzemí) is one of the most extensive labyrinthine systems in Central Europe, located directly beneath the historic center of the city of Plzeň. It consists of a multi-level network of corridors, cellars, and wells dating back to the 13th century.
Visual Characteristics
The underground is characterized by narrow, vaulted corridors constructed from brick and local sandstone. The environment is humid, with a constant temperature of approximately 10°C (50°F). Key visual elements include medieval drainage channels, stone-lined wells, and large storage cellars originally used for food and beer. Some sections feature archaeological displays of medieval artifacts found during excavation.
Location & Access Logistics
The entrance is located at Veleslavínova 6, within the Brewery Museum building.
Access: Entrance is only permitted via guided tours. The route is approximately 800 meters long and takes 50–60 minutes.
Transit: A 5-minute walk from the main square (Náměstí Republiky). The "Náměstí Republiky" tram stop (lines 1, 2) is 200 meters away.
Constraints: For safety reasons, visitors must wear protective helmets (provided). The tour is not wheelchair accessible due to steep stairs and uneven floors.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction began simultaneously with the city's founding in 1295. The system was dug into the sedimentary subsoil to serve three primary functions: food storage, artisanal workshops (including breweries), and defense during sieges. The complex hydrology of the area required the integration of over 360 wells into the network, many of which are still visible.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Water Tower: A 16th-century mechanical system that originally pumped water from the Radbuza River into the city.
Ice Cellars: Deep chambers where ice was stored year-round to facilitate the bottom-fermentation process of Plzeň’s famous lager.
The "Beer Voucher": Adult visitors (18+) receive a "beer voucher" (pivenka) at the end of the tour, redeemable for 0.3L of Pilsner Urquell at selected local restaurants.
Archaeological Finds: Displays of medieval pottery, glass, and leather goods recovered from the wells.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a ticket office, a cloakroom, and a gift shop shared with the Brewery Museum. Public restrooms are available at the entrance. Cellular signal is non-existent within the deeper levels of the underground. Warm clothing is recommended even in summer due to the 10°C internal temperature.
Best Time to Visit
Tours operate year-round, but it is highly recommended to book tickets online in advance, especially during weekends and the "Pilsner Fest" in October. Morning tours are generally less crowded.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical fact is that the underground was used as an air-raid shelter during World War II. Legend suggests that a secret tunnel leads from the underground directly to the Radyně Castle several kilometers away, though no archaeological evidence has ever confirmed this.
