Techmania Science Center, Plzen, Czech Republic, Europe
Techmania Science Center is a modern interactive center located in a renovated industrial complex of the ŠKODA factory in Plzeň. It serves as a primary hub for informal education, focusing on physics, technology, and space.
Visual Characteristics
The center is housed in two massive industrial halls. The main building features a revitalized 1917 ŠKODA factory shell with expansive glass facades and exposed steel trusses. The secondary building is a historic canteen converted into the first 3D Planetarium in the Czech Republic. The aesthetic is industrial-modern, characterized by large-scale interactive installations and high-tech astronomical equipment.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: U Planetária 2969/1, 301 00 Plzeň.
Access: Located at the edge of the ŠKODA industrial zone, west of the city center.
Transit: Trolleybus lines 15 and 17 (stop "Techmania") or a 10-minute walk from the "Plzeň-Jižní Předměstí" train station.
Parking: A dedicated multi-story parking garage is available directly on-site for visitors.
Historical & Technological Origin
Techmania was established in 2005 through a partnership between ŠKODA Investment and the University of West Bohemia. It was designed to revitalize the decaying industrial heritage of the ŠKODA Works. The 3D Planetarium, opened in 2013, utilizes dual-projection technology (Sky-Skan) and is housed in a building that was the first in the country to use the "Hetzers" glued timber truss construction technique.
Key Highlights & Activities
3D Planetarium: Features a 14-meter dome for astronomical projections and a "Science on a Sphere" installation-a giant suspended globe showing planetary data.
Entropa: The center houses the original controversial 16-meter sculpture by David Černý, created for the Czech Presidency of the EU.
Interactive Exhibits: Over 10,000 square meters of exhibits covering themes such as "Edutainment," "Water World," "Man and Science," and "Top Secret."
ŠKODA History: An exhibition featuring historical ŠKODA products, including early locomotives and trolleybuses.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a cafeteria, a specialized science shop (souvenirs), and a cloakroom. 5G signal is stable throughout both buildings. The entire complex is fully wheelchair accessible. Advanced laboratory spaces are available for pre-arranged student workshops.
Best Time to Visit
Techmania is open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 (weekends until 18:00). It is a high-volume destination for school groups during weekday mornings; individual visitors find a quieter environment after 14:00 on weekdays or during the first hour of weekend operation.
Facts & Legends
A verified technical fact is that the Planetarium's dome is one of only a few in Europe capable of 3D projection on a spherical surface. A point of interest is the "Entropa" sculpture, which famously depicted various EU nations as stereotypes; it was moved to Plzeň after being dismantled in Brussels following diplomatic protests.
