Like much of Bielefeld, it suffered damage in WWII and was meticulously restored in the following decades.

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the dual-tower facade, which was a rare and prestigious architectural choice for a city of Bielefeld's size at the time of construction, signaling the wealth of the Ravensberg dynasty. Legend states that the "Marienaltar" was hidden in a secret cellar during the Reformation to protect its Catholic imagery from iconoclasts, only to be rediscovered and reinstated centuries later.
