Sparrenburg Castle (Burg und Festung Sparrenberg) is a restored medieval fortress and the landmark of Bielefeld, situated on the Sparrenberg hill overlooking the city.
Visual Characteristics
The site is a sprawling limestone and brick fortification. It is defined by its massive 37-meter-high round tower and extensive defensive walls. The castle features a combination of medieval stone masonry and later artillery fortifications. The elevated position offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Bielefeld and the Teutoburg Forest.

Transit: 15-minute walk from the city center (Jahnplatz) or via Stadtbahn lines 1 or 2 to the "Adenauerplatz" stop, followed by a steep uphill walk.

Historical Origin
Built around 1240 by the Counts of Ravensberg to protect the city and the trade routes through the Teutoburg Forest. In the 16th century, it was expanded into a powerful Renaissance fortress with massive bastions to withstand artillery. It survived several sieges during the Thirty Years' War. Much of the current appearance is the result of 19th and 20th-century restorations after the castle fell into disrepair.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Tower: A 120-step climb to the observation deck for the best views of the East Westphalia region.
Casemates: A 300-meter-long system of underground tunnels and defensive corridors accessible only via guided tours.
Sparrenburgfest: A large medieval festival held annually in July, featuring knights, craftsmen, and historical reenactments.
Hermannsweg: The castle sits directly on this famous 156km long-distance hiking trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The site includes a modern visitor center with a small museum and gift shop. A restaurant with an outdoor terrace is located within the castle courtyard. Most of the outdoor grounds are gravel-paved; the underground casemates and tower are not wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset: For photography from the ramparts overlooking the city lights.
Late July: To experience the medieval Sparrenburgfest.
Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the castle well, which was dug 50 meters deep through solid rock to ensure a water supply during sieges. Legend states that the castle is connected to the city via secret underground tunnels, though only the defensive casemates have ever been verified.
