Schiessentümpel Waterfall, Echternach, Luxembourg, Europe

The Schiessentümpel is a picturesque triple waterfall located on the Black Ernz river. It is the most iconic landmark of the Mullerthal region (Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland).

Visual Characteristics

The site features a small, three-pronged cascade where the river drops over a sandstone ledge into a shallow pool. Its primary visual identifier is a high-arched stone and wood bridge spanning the falls. The surrounding environment is characterized by large, moss-covered sandstone boulders and a dense forest canopy that creates a green-tinted light filter.

Location & Access Logistics

The waterfall is situated near the village of Müllerthal (municipality of Waldbillig).

Distance from Echternach: 8 kilometers West.

Trail Access: It is a central point on Mullerthal Trail Route 2 and Route 3.

Vehicle: Accessible via the CR121. A dedicated public parking lot is located approximately 500 meters away (between Müllerthal and Consdorf).

Pedestrian: From the parking lot, a wide, flat wooden walkway and gravel path lead to the falls (approx. 10-minute walk).

Historical & Structural Origin

The iconic stone bridge was constructed in 1879. Unlike the medieval ruins in the area, the bridge was built specifically for aesthetic and practical reasons to make the region more accessible to the burgeoning tourism industry of the late 19th century. In 2024, the bridge underwent structural restoration to maintain its stability against the high humidity of the gorge.

Key Highlights & Activities

Photography: This is the most photographed spot in Luxembourg; the bridge and falls are frequently used in national tourism branding.

Mullerthal Trail Hub: The site serves as a junction for several local and national hiking loops.

Black Ernz Valley: The river upstream and downstream from the falls features numerous smaller rapids and sandstone formations.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The site is an outdoor natural monument with free, 24-hour access.

Safety: Wooden railings and stairs allow visitors to descend to the water’s edge.

Accessibility: The path from the parking lot is largely accessible, but the final steps down to the base of the waterfall are steep and not suitable for wheelchairs.

Connectivity: 4G/5G coverage is intermittent due to the narrow valley walls.

Best Time to Visit

After Rainfall: The triple-cascade effect is most prominent when the river volume is high.

Weekdays: The site is extremely crowded on weekends and public holidays.

Autumn: For the contrast of falling orange beech leaves against the dark green moss.

Facts & Legends

While "Schiessentümpel" translates roughly to "shooting pool" or "blasting pool," the name refers to the force with which the water hits the basin during floods. Despite its massive appearance in photographs, the waterfall is relatively small; its fame is derived from the symmetrical harmony between the man-made bridge and the natural rock formations.
