The Shell Cemetery is a geological formation located on the island of Sal, near the town of Santa Maria, Cabo Verde.
It is characterized by a dense accumulation of fossilized shells and marine life.
Visual Characteristics
The site consists of a large, exposed deposit of calcified shells and skeletal remains of marine organisms. The material ranges in color from off-white to light tan, with varying textures due to the different species present. The formation is relatively flat, extending over an area of approximately 500 square meters.
Location & Access Logistics
The Shell Cemetery is situated approximately 2 kilometers west of Santa Maria. Access is via the unpaved road leading towards Ponta Preta. The site is reachable by car or by foot from Santa Maria. Parking is available on the unpaved shoulder adjacent to the formation. No public transport directly serves the site.
Historical & Ecological Origin
This formation is a fossil reef, estimated to be several thousand years old. It represents a period when sea levels were higher, and the area was submerged. The accumulation is primarily composed of the remains of mollusks, corals, and other shallow-water marine invertebrates.
