Siesta Key Beach is situated 8 miles southwest of downtown Sarasota. Access is via Florida State Road 72 (Stickney Point Road) or Florida State Road 752 (Siesta Drive). The main public access point is at 948 Beach Road, Sarasota, FL 34242. Ample parking is available in a large, paved lot that can accommodate over 800 vehicles. Public transportation is provided by the Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) bus route 10, which stops at the beach entrance.

The quartz sand is believed to have originated from the Appalachian Mountains, transported to the Gulf Coast over millions of years by rivers. The beach itself is part of a barrier island system, subject to natural erosion and accretion processes.
