The mound is a low, rounded hill rising approximately 25 feet above the surrounding prairie. Its surface is covered in native prairie grasses, wildflowers, and scattered shrubs. The soil composition is primarily glacial till.
Location & Access Logistics
Spirit Mound is situated 3 miles south of Vermillion, South Dakota. Access is via County Road 12 (also known as 463rd Avenue). A small, unpaved parking area is available at the base of the mound. No public transport services this location.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The mound is a glacial kame, a landform created by the deposition of sediment by glacial meltwater. Historically, it was a significant site for the Yankton Sioux tribe, who believed it was inhabited by spirits. French explorer Pierre-Jean DeSmet documented the site in 1851.
