Stadtbredimus Castle, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
Stadtbredimus Castle is a historic manor house located on the banks of the Moselle River in the village of Stadtbredimus. It is situated approximately 22 kilometers east of Luxembourg City and currently serves as the headquarters for the Vinsmoselle wine cooperative.
Visual Characteristics
The castle is a three-story rectangular structure featuring a whitewashed masonry exterior and a steep slate hipped roof with dormer windows. The architectural style reflects late Renaissance and Baroque influences, with symmetrical window placements and a central entrance portal. A prominent square tower with a pointed roof is attached to the main wing, and the building is surrounded by a stone wall and landscaped gardens facing the river.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at 12 Route du Vin, L-5450 Stadtbredimus. It is accessible from Luxembourg City via the A1 motorway and N10 river road, a drive of approximately 25 minutes. Public bus line 411 connects the Luxembourg central station directly to the "Stadtbredimus, Vinsmoselle" stop located 100 meters from the entrance. A public parking lot is situated directly across the street between the castle and the Moselle quay.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The current building was constructed in 1724 on the foundations of a 13th-century fortified castle. It was the primary residence of the prominent Luxembourgish poet Edmond de la Fontaine, known as Dicks, who lived there from 1858 to 1881. In the 20th century, the property was acquired and renovated to house the administrative offices and cellars of the regional winegrowers' cooperative.
Key Highlights & Activities
The main floor and vaulted cellars are used for wine tastings and sales of local Crémant and Riesling. Visitors can view the memorial plaque dedicated to the poet Dicks located on the exterior wall. The riverfront promenade adjacent to the castle offers a 3-kilometer flat walking path toward Remich.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility includes a professional wine tasting room, a retail shop, and modern restrooms. The building is equipped with 5G cellular coverage. While the ground floor and shop are accessible, the upper floors used for administrative purposes are generally restricted. Shaded outdoor seating is available in the castle courtyard during the summer months.
Best Time to Visit
The retail and tasting areas are open Monday through Friday from 08:00 to 18:00, and on weekends from 10:00 to 18:00. The best time for photography is early morning when the sun rises over the German side of the Moselle, illuminating the castle's eastern facade. Harvest season (September–October) provides the highest level of activity in the surrounding vineyards.
Facts & Legends
Edmond de la Fontaine wrote many of his most famous Luxembourgish plays and poems while residing here; a monument in the village center commemorates his literary contributions. A logistical oddity is the "Lock of the Moselle" (Sluice) located 500 meters downstream, which is one of the critical points for river navigation between France and Germany.
