Established in 1961, Taiping Zoo was initially part of the Taiping Lake Gardens. It was developed to house and exhibit local wildlife. The Night Safari component was added later to provide a different viewing experience. The area is characterized by tropical rainforest vegetation.

The best months for weather are generally between March and September, avoiding the heaviest monsoon periods.

Taiping Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia. A specific local legend tells of a guardian spirit residing in the ancient trees within the zoo grounds, said to protect the animals.
