Tarxien Temples, Paola, Malta, Europe

The Tarxien Temples are a megalithic temple complex located in Paola, Malta. This UNESCO World Heritage site comprises four distinct temple structures dating from the Neolithic period.

Visual Characteristics

The complex consists of four main structures built primarily from globigerina limestone and coralline limestone. The temples feature a series of semi-circular apses and central passages, characteristic of Maltese megalithic architecture. Some blocks display intricate carvings, including spiral motifs, animal reliefs, and altars. The largest temple measures approximately 30 meters in length. The structures are partially roofed for preservation and visitor access.

Location & Access Logistics

The Tarxien Temples are situated in the town of Paola, approximately 4 kilometers south of Valletta city center. Access by car is via Triq it-Tempji Neolitici, with limited street parking available nearby. Public transport options include several bus routes from Valletta, such as lines 81, 82, 84, and 88, which stop within a 5-minute walk of the site. The main entrance is located on Triq it-Tempji Neolitici.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Tarxien Temples occurred in several phases between approximately 3600 BCE and 2500 BCE, during the Neolithic period. The temples were built by the prehistoric inhabitants of Malta. Their original purpose is believed to have been for religious rituals, including animal sacrifice and possibly fertility rites. The site was discovered in 1913 by local farmers and subsequently excavated by Sir Themistocles Zammit.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the intricate stone carvings, including reliefs of goats, pigs, and spiral patterns, within the temple structures. Exploring the different phases of temple construction, from the earliest South Temple to the later Central Temple, is possible via designated pathways. The visitor center provides interpretive displays and artifacts recovered from the site. Guided tours are available at specific times.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The site includes a modern visitor center with ticketing, restrooms, and a gift shop. Pathways within the temple complex are generally accessible, though some areas involve uneven surfaces. Limited shade is available within the covered sections of the temples. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the area. Food vendors and cafes are located in the surrounding town of Paola, within walking distance.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit for comfortable weather is during the shoulder seasons, from April to June and September to November, when temperatures are moderate. Early mornings or late afternoons are optimal for photography, as the natural light enhances the details of the stone carvings. The site is open year-round, but summer months (July-August) can be very hot, making early morning visits preferable.

Facts & Legends

The Tarxien Temples are notable for the discovery of the "Fat Lady" statue, a large, headless figure believed to represent a fertility goddess, now housed in the National Museum of Archaeology. The site also contains a unique oracle hole, a small opening connecting two chambers, possibly used for communication with deities or for acoustic effects during rituals. A specific tip for visitors is to observe the precise alignment of certain temple entrances with solstices, indicating advanced astronomical knowledge.
