Terra Nostra Garden, Azores, Portugal, Europe

Terra Nostra Garden is a large-scale botanical park and thermal retreat situated in the heart of the Furnas Valley on São Miguel Island. It is a key constituent of the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel estate and is recognized as one of the most significant collections of camellias and endemic flora in the Atlantic.

Visual Characteristics

The garden is defined by its massive central thermal pool, which is filled with iron-rich, ochre-colored water maintained at a constant $35$°C to $40$°C. The landscape architecture includes a mix of formal English gardens, dense woodland sections with $100$-year-old trees, and themed collections like the Garden of Cycads and the Camellia Collection. Basalt stone paths, serpentine water canals, and grottoes are integrated throughout the $12$-hectare property.

Location & Access Logistics

The gardens are located at Rua Padre José Jacinto Botelho, in the center of Furnas village. Access from Ponta Delgada is via the EN1-1A highway, approximately 42 kilometers to the east. Public bus lines 101, 102, and 103 provide service to the village center. Public parking is available in the streets surrounding the Terra Nostra Garden Hotel or at the Furnas Lake parking lots a short distance away.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The estate was established in 1775 by Thomas Hickling, the American Consul in São Miguel, who built a summer residence and the original thermal pool. In the mid-19th century, the Viscounts of Praia expanded the grounds, and later, the Blandy family and the Bensaude Group further developed the botanical diversity. The garden’s ecology is sustained by the nutrient-rich volcanic soil and the humid, temperate microclimate of the Furnas Caldera.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming in the large iron-rich thermal tank and the two smaller, hidden "jacuzzi" pools is the primary activity. Visitors can explore the botanical circuits, specifically the specialized collections of ferns (nearly 300 species) and the award-winning camellia garden. Guided tours are available to explain the history of the tree species and the geothermal water source.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The site features changing rooms and outdoor showers located near the main thermal pool. Public restrooms are available at the entrance and within the park interior. 5G cellular coverage is strong throughout the village and garden. The Terra Nostra Restaurant is located adjacent to the entrance, and the park offers plenty of shaded benches and gazebos for visitors.

Best Time to Visit

The optimal time for a visit is early morning at 09:00 to avoid the tour bus arrivals or late afternoon before the 18:00 closing time. For floral displays, the camellias are at their peak from January to April. Overcast or rainy days are considered ideal for the thermal baths, as the cooler air temperature enhances the experience of the warm volcanic water.

Facts & Legends

The iron content in the thermal water is so high that it will permanently stain light-colored swimwear orange; visitors are advised to use dark-colored clothing. A verified historical feature is the "Yankee Hall," the original wooden cottage built by Thomas Hickling, which still stands as a testament to the garden's 18th-century American-Azorean roots.
