It is situated on the south bank of the Zambezi River.

Visual Characteristics

The cathedral is constructed primarily from red brick, with white trim around windows and doorways. It features a single, tall bell tower on the western side. The roof is pitched and covered in corrugated metal. The main facade has a large arched entrance and several smaller arched windows. The interior is simple, with a nave and side aisles, supported by brick pillars.

Location & Access Logistics

The cathedral is located in the central district of Tete. It is approximately 1 kilometer west of the Praça dos Heróis (Heroes' Square), the city's main square. Access is via Avenida Eduardo Mondlane, which leads directly to the cathedral's entrance. Limited street parking is available directly in front of the building. Public transport within Tete primarily consists of shared taxis and moto-taxis; these can drop visitors at the cathedral's doorstep.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The original structure was built in the 1950s, with construction completed in 1957. It was designed to serve as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tete. The site itself is on a relatively flat plain adjacent to the Zambezi River.

Key Highlights & Activities

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available within the cathedral complex. Shade is provided by the building's structure and some mature trees on the grounds. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally reliable in this area of Tete. There are no food vendors directly on-site, but small shops and eateries are located within a 500-meter radius.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the late afternoon (approximately 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM) offers favorable lighting on the red brick facade. The dry season, from May to October, generally provides the most pleasant weather conditions for visiting.

Facts & Legends

The cathedral was elevated to its status as a cathedral upon the establishment of the Diocese of Tete in 1962. A unique detail is the presence of a small shrine to Our Lady of Fatima within the church, reflecting its dedication.
