Viroi Lake, Gjirokaster, Albania, Europe
Viroi Lake, also known as the Viroi Park (Parku i Viroit), is a karst lake and natural park situated on the northern outskirts of Gjirokastër. It is a significant ecological site known for its underwater cave system and serves as the city's primary recreational green space.
Visual Characteristics
The lake is characterized by clear, deep-blue water that remains exceptionally still during the dry season. It is surrounded by a dense forest of pines and Mediterranean shrubs, with a stone-paved promenade circling its perimeter. A notable visual feature is the Mother Teresa (Nënë Tereza) bridge that spans a section of the water. The surrounding limestone cliffs rise sharply from the western shore, housing the cave entrance that feeds the lake.
Location & Access Logistics
The park is located approximately 3km north of Gjirokastër city center along the SH4 national highway (the main road toward Tepelena). It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or the local Gjirokastër city bus, which stops at the park entrance. Ample free parking is available along the highway and near the park's service buildings. The terrain around the lake is flat and suitable for all mobility levels.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Viroi is a seasonal karst spring. During the winter and spring, underground water from the Broad Mountain (Mali i Gjerë) surges through an underwater cave system, filling the basin and sometimes overflowing into the Drino River. In the peak of summer, the spring often stops flowing, and the lake level recedes. The underwater cave has been explored by international diving expeditions to depths exceeding 240 meters.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking, cycling, and jogging along the 1.5km perimeter path are the most frequent activities. The park is a popular spot for picnics and birdwatching. For specialized visitors, technical cave diving is a major draw, although it requires specific permits and high-level expertise due to the depth and complexity of the Viroi cave. The park also features several playgrounds for children.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The area is well-developed with multiple restaurants and cafes located directly on the lakefront. Public restrooms are available within these commercial establishments. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. The park is equipped with benches, street lighting for evening use, and several designated trash disposal points. Shade is abundant due to the mature pine forest surrounding the water.
Best Time to Visit
The most dramatic time to visit is during the spring (March–May) when the karst spring is active and the water volume is at its peak. For recreation, late afternoon and evening are preferred by locals to utilize the shaded paths. The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round, and is free of charge.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition holds that the waters of Viroi are connected to hidden underground rivers that reach as far as the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) on the other side of the mountain range. While not geologically proven, the "breathing" nature of the lake-disappearing in summer and erupting in winter-has long been a subject of local folklore regarding the mountain's internal spirits.
