Willis Tower (Sears Tower), Chicago, USA Illinois, North America

Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower, is a 108-story skyscraper located in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

It stands as a prominent feature of the Chicago skyline and a significant example of late 20th-century architecture.

Visual Characteristics

The building is constructed from steel and glass, with a distinctive bundled tube design. Its exterior is primarily clad in dark aluminum and glass panels. The tower reaches a height of 1,450 feet (442 meters) to the roof, with its antennas extending to 1,729 feet (527 meters). The architectural style is classified as structural expressionism.

Location & Access Logistics

Willis Tower is situated at 233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL 60606. It is located in the Loop district, approximately 0.5 km west of the Chicago River. Public transportation access is extensive; the CTA 'L' trains serve nearby stations, including the Quincy/Wells (Brown, Orange, Pink, Purple Lines) and Clark/Lake (Blue, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple Lines) stations, both within a 0.5 km radius. Numerous bus routes also stop directly in front of or adjacent to the building. Parking is available in a multi-level garage accessible from Franklin Street and Jackson Boulevard.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the tower began in August 1970 and was completed in May 1973. It was designed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), with chief designers Bruce Graham and Fazlur Khan. Its original purpose was to serve as the headquarters for Sears, Roebuck and Co., one of the largest retailers in the world at the time.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can access the Skydeck Chicago observation deck on the 103rd floor. This deck features "The Ledge," a glass box extending 4.3 feet out from the building, offering views of the city. The Skydeck is accessible via express elevators. Guided tours of the observation deck are available.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on the Skydeck. Limited shaded areas are present on the observation deck. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the building. Food vendors and dining options are located within the tower's ground-level retail concourse and in the immediate vicinity.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal photography, early morning or late afternoon provides favorable lighting conditions. The best months for clear views are typically October through March, when atmospheric haze is less prevalent. The observation deck is open year-round, with no specific tide requirements.

Facts & Legends

The building's original name, Sears Tower, remained in use for 36 years until it was officially renamed Willis Tower in 2009 following a naming rights deal. A persistent urban legend claims that on exceptionally clear days, one can see four states from the Skydeck: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
