Other common speleothems include frostwork, needles, and dogtooth spar crystals. The surface landscape consists of mixed-grass prairie with ponderosa pine forests in higher elevations.

Access to the park is via U.S. Highway 385. The main entrance is located 10 miles north of Hot Springs, SD. Parking is available at the visitor center. Public transportation is not available to the park; visitors typically arrive by private vehicle. The nearest major airport is Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP), approximately 70 miles northeast.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Wind Cave was discovered by white settlers in 1881. Its name derives from the natural wind currents that blow in and out of the cave entrance. The cave is a natural boxwork cave, a rare geological formation. The surface ecosystem is a mixed-grass prairie, supporting diverse wildlife.

Cave tours are the primary activity. Available tours include the Natural Entrance Tour, Fairgrounds Tour, and the more strenuous Garden of Eden Tour. Surface activities include hiking on designated trails, wildlife viewing (bison, elk, prairie dogs), and backcountry camping. Ranger-led programs are offered seasonally.

The park features a visitor center with restrooms and a gift shop. Limited shade is available near the visitor center. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park, particularly in the cave system. Food vendors are not present within the park; visitors should bring their own provisions or purchase them in Hot Springs.
Best Time to Visit
The cave temperature remains a constant 54°F (12°C) year-round, making any time suitable for cave tours. For surface activities and wildlife viewing, late spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) offer moderate temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer months (July-August) can be hot on the surface.
Facts & Legends
The Lakota people have a spiritual connection to Wind Cave, considering it the birthplace of their people. A unique geological feature is the "Narrows," a section of the cave where the passage is only 18 inches wide.
