Construction of the Zahir Mosque began in 1912 and was completed in 1915. It was funded by Tunku Mahmud Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Mukarram Shah, the then Sultan of Kedah. The mosque was built on the site of an old mosque that had fallen into disrepair. Its original purpose was to serve as a central place of worship for the Muslim community in Kedah and to commemorate the victory of the Kedah army against the Siamese in an earlier conflict.
