Historical & Ecological Origin
Constructed in the early 19th century, the fort served as a primary defensive stronghold for the oasis and its water resources. It was significantly renovated in the late 19th century and underwent full restoration in 1993. The site sits on an arid alluvial plain historically supported by the Falaj Al Sa'ara irrigation system.

Facts & Legends
The name "Al Khandaq" translates to "The Moat." It is one of the few Omani fortifications featuring a complete perimeter trench, a design choice intended to prevent tunneling and direct scaling by invaders, making it a unique example of regional military engineering.
