Atuona’s Ancient Platforms, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, Australia
Atuona’s Ancient Platforms are a collection of archaeological sites located on the island of Hiva Oa in the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia.
These platforms represent pre-European Polynesian construction and settlement patterns.
Visual Characteristics
The platforms are constructed from dark volcanic rock, typically basalt. They are rectangular or square in shape, with raised edges. The size varies, with some measuring approximately 10 meters by 15 meters. Vegetation, including breadfruit trees and ferns, often grows on and around the platforms, partially obscuring their original form.
Location & Access Logistics
The platforms are situated inland from the village of Atuona. Access is via a dirt track that branches off the main road leading from Atuona towards the airport. The track is approximately 2 kilometers long and is best navigated by 4x4 vehicle or by walking. Parking is available at the trailhead. There are no direct public transport routes to the platforms.
Historical & Ecological Origin
These platforms, known as paepae, are remnants of ancient Marquesan dwellings and ceremonial sites. They were constructed by the indigenous Marquesan people prior to European contact, likely between the 14th and 18th centuries. The purpose was to create stable, elevated living and gathering spaces on uneven terrain.
Key Highlights & Activities

Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities at the Atuona’s Ancient Platforms. Restrooms, shade, and food vendors are not present. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent in the immediate vicinity.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is mid-morning or late afternoon to avoid harsh overhead sunlight. The dry season, from May to October, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rainfall.
Facts & Legends
One of the largest platforms in the Atuona area is believed to have been a significant meeting place for tribal elders. Local oral traditions suggest that important decisions regarding land distribution and inter-tribal relations were made here.
