Avlija Džamija, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
The Avlija Džamija (Courtyard Mosque), officially known as the Havadža Durak Mosque, is a 16th-century Ottoman mosque located in the heart of the Baščaršija bazaar in Sarajevo. It is situated at the intersection of Baščaršija and Čekaluša streets, specifically within the trade district.
Visual Characteristics
The mosque is characterized by its integration into the dense urban fabric of the bazaar. Unlike many freestanding mosques, it is largely enclosed by surrounding shops and buildings, accessible through a small courtyard (avlija) that gives the site its colloquial name.
Architecture: It features a modest stone structure with a traditional lead-covered dome.
The Minaret: A slender, stone octagonal minaret located on the right side of the entrance.
The Courtyard: A small, stone-paved interior space used for ablutions and as a buffer between the busy bazaar and the prayer hall.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Baščaršija, 71000 Sarajevo.
Transport: 50-meter walk from the main Baščaršija tram stop.
Entry: Open during the five daily prayer times. Visitors must follow standard mosque protocols: removing shoes, maintaining silence, and wearing modest attire (covering shoulders and knees).
Historical Context
Built in the 1520s by Havadža Durak, a local benefactor, the mosque was designed to serve the merchants and craftsmen working in the surrounding bazaar. It has been damaged several times throughout history, most notably during the fire of 1697 and the Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1996), after which it was fully restored to its original Ottoman appearance.
Key Highlights & Activities
Urban Integration: The mosque is a prime example of a "bazaar mosque," designed for the convenience of the local merchant class.
Calligraphy: The interior contains traditional 19th-century calligraphic inscriptions on the walls and dome.
Quietude: Despite its location in the city's busiest tourist area, the inner courtyard offers a high degree of acoustic isolation.
