National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe
The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a scientific and cultural institution located in the Marijin Dvor neighborhood of Sarajevo. It is the oldest modern museum in the country, consisting of four symmetric pavilions connected by a central botanical garden.
Visual Characteristics
The complex features a Neo-Renaissance architectural style designed by Karel Pařík. It is composed of four separate two-story buildings constructed of stone and brick with symmetrical facades. The central courtyard contains a botanical garden housing over 2,000 plant species and several medieval stone tombstones known as stećci.
Location & Access Logistics
The museum is situated at Zmaja od Bosne 3, approximately 2km West of the old city center (Baščaršija). It is accessible via tram lines 2, 3, or 5 at the Muzeji stop. The Sarajevo main railway and bus stations are located 500 meters North. Limited street parking is available on adjacent side streets, and a large commercial parking lot is located at the nearby Alta Shopping Center.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Founded in 1888, the current facility was completed in 1913. It was established during the Austro-Hungarian administration to house archaeological, ethnological, and natural history collections. The botanical garden was established simultaneously to serve as a living laboratory for the Natural History department.
Key Highlights & Activities
The museum houses the Sarajevo Haggadah, a 14th-century illuminated manuscript, which is displayed in a high-security vault. Visitors can view the ethnology department's reconstructed traditional house interiors and the archaeology department’s collection of Roman mosaics and Illyrian artifacts. The natural history wing contains extensive taxidermy and geological samples.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are located on the ground floor of the archaeology and natural history pavilions. The botanical garden provides extensive seating and shade. Cellular coverage (4G/5G) is functional throughout the site. A small museum shop is located in the entrance hall, but there are no food vendors inside the museum buildings.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for visiting is Tuesday through Friday during morning hours to avoid weekend crowds. The botanical garden is most visually prominent during the blooming period from late April to June. Natural lighting in the pavilions is optimal for viewing exhibits between 11:00 and 14:00.
Facts & Legends
During the 1992–1995 war, the museum was located on the front line ("Sniper Alley"). Staff members famously risked their lives to protect the Sarajevo Haggadah by hiding it in a bank vault, and later in the museum's basement, to prevent its destruction or theft. The building still bears visible shrapnel scars on its exterior stone walls.
