Bamendjin Lake, Nkongsamba, Cameroon, Africa
Bamendjin Lake is an artificial reservoir located near Nkongsamba in Cameroon's Littoral Region.
It serves as a primary source of water for the surrounding agricultural areas.
Visual Characteristics
The lake's surface is generally calm, reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation. Its perimeter is defined by earthen embankments and natural shorelines. Water color varies from deep blue to greenish-brown depending on sediment load and depth. The surrounding landscape consists of tropical savanna and scattered forest patches.
Location & Access Logistics
Bamendjin Lake is situated approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Nkongsamba. Access is primarily via the unpaved road connecting Nkongsamba to Melong. From Nkongsamba, take the N1 road towards Melong for approximately 10 kilometers, then turn southwest onto the local access road. The final 5 kilometers are on a dirt track, passable by 4x4 vehicles, especially during the dry season. No public transport directly serves the lake; private vehicles or hired taxis are the most feasible options. Parking is informal and available on the lake's periphery.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Bamendjin Lake was constructed in the 1970s as part of a larger agricultural development project aimed at providing irrigation for rice cultivation. It is an artificial lake, created by damming the Mbam River. The dam is an earth-fill structure.
Key Highlights & Activities
Fishing is a common activity for local residents. Birdwatching is possible due to the presence of various waterfowl. The lake's perimeter offers opportunities for walking, though trails are not formally maintained. Boat access is limited to small, manually operated fishing vessels.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no formal visitor facilities at Bamendjin Lake. Restrooms are not available. Shade is provided by natural vegetation along the shoreline. Cell phone signal is intermittent and generally weak. Food vendors are not present at the lake itself; provisions should be made in Nkongsamba or Melong.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to March, offers the most accessible conditions due to improved road conditions. The early morning and late afternoon provide optimal lighting for photography, with softer light and potential for mist on the water. High tide is not a relevant consideration for this artificial lake.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the lake's creation displaced a significant number of spirits, and offerings are sometimes made at the dam site to appease them. The lake's water level is managed through sluice gates at the dam, which are operated seasonally to support irrigation needs.
