Location & Access Logistics
Lake Monoun is located 15 kilometers southwest of Nkongsamba. Access is via a dirt track branching off the main Nkongsamba-Melong road (N5). The track is approximately 3 kilometers long and can be challenging for standard vehicles, especially during the rainy season. Four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended. Public transport to Nkongsamba is available via bus from major cities like Douala and Yaoundé. From Nkongsamba, local taxis or hired transport are required to reach the vicinity of the lake.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Lake Monoun is a maar lake, formed by a phreatomagmatic eruption, a type of volcanic eruption caused by the interaction of magma and groundwater. This geological event occurred approximately 1,500 years ago. The lake is part of a volcanic field characterized by numerous small craters and cones.
Key Highlights & Activities

Facts & Legends
Lake Monoun is known for a limnic eruption event that occurred on August 21, 1984. This event released a large cloud of carbon dioxide from the lake, leading to the deaths of 37 people in nearby villages. This incident highlighted the potential danger of dissolved gases in deep crater lakes.
