The Battle of Carthage Historic Site is a preserved battlefield located near Carthage, Missouri, USA.

This site commemorates the first major land battle of the American Civil War fought in Missouri.

The site consists of open fields with rolling terrain, interspersed with stands of deciduous trees. The primary geological feature is the prairie landscape characteristic of southwest Missouri. No permanent structures remain from the battle era, with the exception of interpretive signage and boundary markers.

The Battle of Carthage Historic Site is situated approximately 3.2 kilometers (2 miles) north of the Carthage city center. Access is via State Highway 96 (Maple Street) heading north. Turn east onto County Road 100. Parking is available in a designated gravel lot at the site entrance. No public transport services operate directly to the site.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site preserves the location of the Battle of Carthage, which occurred on July 5, 1861. This engagement was fought between Union forces under Colonel Franz Sigel and Confederate forces under Brigadier General James McBride. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and was significant for its early role in the Missouri theater of the Civil War.

Visitors can walk the battlefield perimeter. Interpretive panels detail troop movements and key events of the battle. A designated walking trail follows portions of the historical engagement lines. Photography of the landscape is possible throughout the year.

For landscape photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination. The months of April through October offer the most comfortable weather for outdoor exploration. The site is accessible year-round, weather permitting.

Facts & Legends

A specific historical detail is that Colonel Sigel's artillery was positioned on what is now known as "Artillery Hill," a prominent rise on the battlefield. This position allowed for a commanding view of the Confederate advance.
