Fantastic Caverns is a solutional cave, formed over millions of years by the dissolution of soluble bedrock, primarily limestone, by groundwater. It was discovered in 1862 by a farmer named John Jones. The cave was opened for public tours in 1930.

During the Prohibition era, the cave was allegedly used to store illegal alcohol due to its constant cool temperature. Local lore suggests that the cave system extends much further than currently explored, though this remains unverified.
