The Big Buddha of Phuket is a large statue situated on Nakkerd Hills, overlooking the island of Phuket, Thailand.

The statue is constructed from reinforced concrete clad in Burmese white jade marble. It stands 45 meters (148 feet) tall. The architectural style is predominantly Buddhist, with influences from Burmese and Thai religious art.

Location & Access Logistics

The Big Buddha is located approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Chalong Bay. Access is via Phra Tamnak Road, which transitions into Phra Tamnak Soi 2, then onto a steep, paved road leading to the site. Parking is available at the base of the statue. Public transport options are limited; local songthaews (shared taxis) can be hired from Chalong or Phuket Town, or private taxis are available.

Construction of the Big Buddha began in 2002 and is ongoing, funded primarily by donations. The primary purpose is religious and as a tourist attraction. The statue is situated on a limestone hill.

Visitors can walk around the base of the statue, observe the construction progress, and take photographs. Small donation boxes are available for contributions to the ongoing construction. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is late afternoon, approximately one hour before sunset, for optimal lighting conditions. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather. There are no tide-dependent activities.

Facts & Legends

A unique aspect of the site is the presence of numerous small bells hanging from the roof of the main hall, which chime with the wind. Visitors are encouraged to wear respectful attire, covering shoulders and knees.
