James Bond Island, Phuket, Thailand, Asia
James Bond Island, officially known as Koh Tapu, is a limestone karst tower located in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand.
It gained international recognition for its appearance in the 1974 James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun."
Visual Characteristics
Koh Tapu is a slender, vertical rock formation rising approximately 20 meters (66 feet) from the sea. It is characterized by its distinctive mushroom-like shape, with a wider base and a narrower top. The rock is composed of limestone, exhibiting a greyish-brown hue. The surrounding waters are typically a clear turquoise, and the island is fringed by small, sandy coves.
Location & Access Logistics
James Bond Island is situated in Ao Phang Nga National Park, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the mainland town of Khao Lak. Access is exclusively by boat. Longtail boats and speedboats can be hired from piers such as Tha Yu or Bang Rong, which are located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Phuket City. The boat journey to the island takes approximately 45-60 minutes from these piers. There is no direct road access. Parking is available at the departure piers.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Koh Tapu is a natural geological formation, a result of karst topography. The limestone cliffs in Phang Nga Bay were formed over millions of years through the dissolution of soluble rocks by water. The island's current shape is attributed to erosion processes, including wave action and weathering, which have sculpted the rock into its unique form. It is part of an extensive system of sea caves, submerged sinkholes, and towering limestone formations.
Key Highlights & Activities
The primary activity is viewing the island from a boat and taking photographs. Kayaking around the base of Koh Tapu and through nearby sea caves is a common excursion. Visitors can also observe the island from the adjacent island of Koh Ping Gan, which offers a closer perspective and small beaches.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no facilities on Koh Tapu itself. Basic amenities such as restrooms and food vendors are available on the larger island of Koh Ping Gan, which is a popular stop for tour boats. Cell phone signal is generally available in the bay, though it can be intermittent.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is generally in the morning when the light is softer and the sea is calmer. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions with less rain and calmer seas. High tide can make access to some of the smaller coves more challenging.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that the island was created when a fisherman caught a golden fish, which transformed into a sword and then into the island itself. Another story tells of a sword being thrown into the sea, which then became the island. The island's distinctive shape has led to it being nicknamed "Nail Island."
