Big Sand Beach is situated 3 kilometers south of the main settlement of Clifton. Access is via the paved Union Island Airport Road, turning south onto a gravel track for the final 500 meters. Parking is available on an unpaved area adjacent to the beach. Public transport to Clifton is available via local minibuses; from Clifton, a 30-minute walk or a pre-arranged taxi is required.

Historical & Ecological Origin

This area is a natural accumulation of marine sediment, primarily coral fragments and shell detritus, shaped by prevailing currents and wave action over geological time. It is classified as a sandy littoral zone within a tropical marine ecosystem.

Swimming is possible in calm conditions. Sunbathing is a primary activity. Birdwatching opportunities exist for coastal species. The area is suitable for beachcombing.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning (07:00-09:00) offers softer light. The driest months are typically February through April. Calm sea conditions are most common between December and May.

Facts & Legends
