Richmond Bay, Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, North America
Richmond Bay is a coastal inlet located on the southern side of Union Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
This bay is characterized by its shallow, clear turquoise waters and a shoreline composed of fine, light-colored sand.
Visual Characteristics
The bay features a crescent-shaped sandy beach approximately 800 meters in length. The water depth increases gradually from the shore. The surrounding vegetation consists of low-lying scrub and scattered palm trees. The seabed is primarily sand with some scattered coral formations visible in shallower areas.
Location & Access Logistics
Richmond Bay is situated 3 kilometers south of the main settlement of Clifton. Access is via the paved Union Island Road, which runs along the coast. Turn south onto an unpaved track approximately 1 kilometer past Clifton. Parking is available at the end of this track, with space for approximately 15 vehicles. Public transport options are limited; local taxis can be hired from Clifton, or a boat transfer can be arranged from Clifton Harbour.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Richmond Bay is a natural geological formation, a shallow embayment formed by coastal erosion and sediment deposition over millennia. The bay's ecosystem is a shallow marine environment supporting seagrass beds and small coral patches, typical of the Grenadine archipelago.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming is possible in the calm waters. Snorkeling is recommended in the areas with visible coral formations, particularly during calm sea conditions. Beachcombing along the sandy shoreline is also an available activity.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent restroom facilities or food vendors directly at Richmond Bay. Shade is provided by natural vegetation. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available but can be intermittent closer to the water's edge.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for photography is between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM when the sun is highest, illuminating the water color. The dry season, from January to April, offers the most consistent weather. Low tide conditions may expose more of the sandy seabed.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that the bay was historically used as a clandestine landing spot for small vessels due to its relatively sheltered position. The sand composition is primarily crushed coral and shell fragments.
